Quota me Happy

Why is it that just as one sports organisation realises quota systems are a stupid waste of time, another much more powerful one wants to bring them in?

As far as I can see, the effects will be thus:

1) Prices for English players increase dramatically as demand increases. As with most football transfers, this will be most outrageous at the lower end of the talent pool. Few could bemoan a Hargreaves or an Owen commanding a high fee, but expect to see makeweights like Nicky Shorey and Stuart Downing going for silly money, purely because of their nationality.

2) The quality of the Premier League goes down. As talented foreign stars are replaced with less talented Englishmen, so the quality will decrease.

3) Because of this decrease in quality, the English players will be playing with, and against, weaker players and so their ability will not be as high as it is now. Therefore, the England team will be worse also.

The only plus for the England team I can see would be:

- due to the advantages of being England qualified, more African and Commonwealth players opt to play for England, thus increasing the talent pool available. The French have been doing this for years (Patrice Evra and Patrick Vieira were both born in Dakar, Senegal, for example). What Englishman wouldn't welcome football's answer to big KP?

The real question is not "is it a good thing that so many foreigners play in the premiership?" so much as "why do so few british players play abroad". It is obviously harder for British players to break into British teams with foreign stars if they will only play for, say, 20 teams. If they will (/are good enough to) play abroad, there are 100s of options; British talent is safe, as long as it will take the opportunities. If it can't or won't, fuck it.

Was thinking, is this a primarily anti-Arsenal move? No wonder Stevie G is against it after he got pwned by Cesc the other week. Also, with limits on foreigners, he might not lose his place when Xabi Alonso returns to fitness...

Also, I think this is probably a case of idiots who don't understand anything getting causation the wrong way round.

There are lots of non-English players in the Premiership because English players are gash, English players aren't gash because of the foreigners.

Another point: At any one time there are only about 25-30 players with any hope of playing for England. Why should the national team give a shit if Kevin Davies plays for Bolton or not?

another point: fuck the national team, international football is just a bit of a laugh and an excuse to get really drunk in the summer, the only football that really matters or means anything is club football. Would I rather England qualified and won Euro 2008, or Bath City get promoted this season? No fucking contest.

Your national team is a peach though Oli. From Red Bull swigging metaller Marcus Hahnemann to hip hop's Clint Dempsey (AKA "Deuce") there's more character there than the whole of my miserable Nation.

i don't know if you're deliberately trying to wind me up, but my national team is England. Supporting the England football team was the key that opened up my conversion to Britian and allegiance to her Queen.

sorry, Britain. they didn't have citizenship tests in my day.

Me? Winding you up? Whatever gave you that idea ;)
